ITINERARY

DAY 1 WED   USA /EUROPE / ACCRA (D- in flight)

Depart from USA to Africa with stop in Europe.

 Enjoy complimentary cocktails, dinner, and movies during your overnight flight.

DAY 2 THU   EUROPE / ACCRA

Welcome to Accra! After clearing customs and immigrations, you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel. 

Your guide will assist you with the check-in, give you a briefing on the hotel and neighborhood and advise you of the meeting time for tonight’s dinner.

Welcome drinks including traditional drumming and dancing and libation pouring ceremony at the forecourt of the hotel.

DAY 3 FRI   TORGOME VILLAGE / SHAI HILLS GAME RESERVE (B, L)

Torgome Village (full day-8 hours)
There will be a brief orientation after which the group will take a scenic drive along the Accra plains to the beautiful village of Torgorme located on the lower course of the splendid Volta River. You will have the opportunity to pay a courtesy call on the paramount chief and elders, and also participate in a naming ceremony, where you will be given traditional African name. Other activities include a demonstration of pottery making which is the main occupation of the women in Torgorme, and traditional drumming and dancing by the villages. If appropriate, the village would welcome a performance by members of the group. Later visit the community schools, library and clinic.

Shai Game Reserve
Where you will have a picnic lunch. Shai Hills Game reserve is covered with low stature dry evergreen forest and is home to antelopes and baboons. The adventurous can explore the vertical caves, which was home to the Shai people 400 years ago.

Dinner free, with options tours provided by your guide. 

KASA (TALK TIME)- An opportunity to learn more about Ghanaian culture or simply talk to each other and share information about the experiences you are having on the tour. Your tour leader or tour guide leads Kasa discussions. (This activity is optional)

DAY 4 SAT   ACCRA (B)

Drumming and Dance workshop (half day-4 hours)
you will have an opportunity to participate in a drumming and dancing workshop lead by Centers resident institutions. 

DAY 5 SUN   ACCRA (B)

Accra City Tour (half day-4 hours)
After breakfast depart hotel for a sightseeing city tour of Accra. You will drive through the economic districts of Accra, the capital of Ghana. This 124-year-old city with has a blend of colonial and modern architecture that summarize her history. You will visit the W. E. B. Dubois Center for Pan African Culture, Independence/ Black Star Square and Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

Back to the hotel for last minute packing for your trip back home. Depart to the airport for departure formalities and then a Farewell Dinner at a local restaurant

DAY 6 MON   ACCRA/ ELMINA (B, D)

Oguaa Ne Edina – Cape Coast & Elmina (full day-8 hours)
Depart for a scenic drive to the Central Region to tour the infamous forts, castles and slave dungeons of Ghana.  Visit the site of “Donkor Nsuo”, the former Slave River and market, the final transit point for enslaved Africans.  This is the final resting place for two ancestors whose mortal remains were returned from the USA and Jamaica and re-interred there.  Continue the drive further south to Elmina .After check in and lunch in your hotel; spend the rest of the day at leisure. Dinner at Coconut Grove Beach Resort Elmina.

DAY 7 TUE    ELMINA/CAPE COAST (B, L)

Kakum National Park & Elmina Castle (full day-8 hours)
Depart for a drive through the historic Denkyira Kingdom to Kakum National Park, one of West Africa’s surviving tropical rain forests.  Choose between a 2 km nature walk through this forest to discover the wide variety of exotic floral species and the medicinal values they offer or take a walk on the canopy walkway hanging 60 meters above the forest ground. Later witness a cultural performance by the KUKYEKUKYEKU BAMBOO ORCHESTRA. After lunch at the park restaurant depart for a visit to the St. George's Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482, and is also known as Elmina Castle. History will unfold the story of the slave trade whose impact is still felt beyond the shores of Africa today.

DAY 8 WED   CAPE COAST/ ACCRA (B, L)

Cape Cost Castle (half day-4 hours)
Depart for a visit to Cape Coast, built in 1653 by the Swedes and was later taken over by the British. This castle also houses the West African Historical Museum. The group will watch a documentary titled “Crossroads of Trade, Crossroad of People” at the Cape Coast Castle. After lunch at Coconut Grove hotel depart for a scenic drive along the coast to Accra. 

DAY 9 THU   ACCRA (B, D)

Day at leisure. Enjoy optional tours.

DAY 10 FRI    ACCRA /USA

Transfer to the airport to your flight to Europe. Fly to USA. Clear customs
